Hair I Am?
What is Hair I Am?
When rearranged, Hair I Am becomes ‘I Am Hair’, a declaration of being defined by society based on the semiotics of appearance. Hair I Am is also the homonym of ‘Here I Am’, a declaration of the artist being present in her hair.
Hair I Am is a performance piece by Rachel Lee. According to Lee, the aim was to ‘have my mother do my hair as she did when I was a child, then cut off my braids and shave my head. My braids will be gifted to my mother.’ Rachel Lee wanted to project a tone of genuine and raw care through an act of coming of age.
