With nature being the core to my inspiration, this image represents a textile piece inspired by the beach. Throughout the final year of my degree, I was determined to create a collection of beautiful and luxurious textiles that did not result from technology to showcase my handcrafted skills. As well as this piece being inspired from nature, it also holds a piece of nature within it. I was interested in using seaweed and further developed this by creating a seaweed sequin to use as embellishment. I wanted to show that designers are able to create beautiful pieces of work by incorporating it with something that we are surrounded with. This piece consists of a base fabric of wool, which has been hand dyed and embellished. The organic form growing from the pink wool is inspired by barnacles from a photograph I took at Kingsdown beach in Kent. It consists of a hand embroidery technique, the French knot and cutwork, along with a pulled thread technique. I have also incorporated plastic within this piece to give it more of a contemporary touch with a finishing of the seaweed sequin. This image was taken at Newhaven beach in Edinburgh to show where the inspiration had began.
